When I started getting into Star Wars, I often added the disclaimer of “I don’t really read or like SFF, but…” Around the same time, when I started reading comics, I put them in very discrete categories—they were comics, not SFF—even the ones that clearly were. Rarely do good books get turned into good movies. And rarely do good movies come from good books. Of course everyone can think of a few examples (Deliverance, The Thin Red Line, The Last Temptation of Christ), but they’re so outnumbered by their lackluster cousins that they just might be the exceptions that prove the rule. In Iceland there’s a wonderful tradition called Jolabokaflod. This roughly translates to “Christmas book flood” and refers to the practice of exchanging books for Christmas, to be read on Christmas Eve — preferably with a mug of hot chocolate.
